You don t need a virus to get file corruption. eg, a server sends 10 bytes on UDP, the client receives only 9, or in wrong order, or some bits(or bytes) swapped -> client gets corrupted data... that s why you always get MD5 or at least CRC32 checksums at all the downloads ...
another way would be having your computer crash while writing to the hard dist -> corresponding sector(s) corrupted as well as the file(s) on it.
...
You can increase the framerate by reencoding the video. Eventually you can increase it with the ffmpeg spliter(<- the program that starts everytime your windows classic mediaplayer loads a mkv)'s video options, too.

Not much probable. The first generation of geforce chips get their drivers updated very infrequently ( the forceware that gets releases every now and then is for geforce fx > 6000 ). If Windows Vista is used chances are high that the shipped driver already has full support for the GFFX5 features ( unless maybe nVidia got some OpenGL 3 stuff into the GFFX5 branch of their driver ).
Even if he only uses XP, with all service packs installed he should get recent 2D accelleration - and more isn t needed.
