Default External Hard Disk Problem

I have this problem with my external Hard Disksthat I hope anyone can help me with. I currently have two hard disks, one for computer games and the other for Files & Pictures. Whenever I unplug my hard disks and plug it back in, the disks tend to exchange the letters (eg; my 'F' drive becomes my 'G' drive and vice versa). This poses a problem when playing my games as the games cannot recognise the program files on the disk I had saved into (due to the change in the letter) and I have to uninstal and reinstal all my games. Is there any way to change back to their original letters and to permanently retain the letters so that this would not happen again?

Would greatly appreciate any assistance.

That is not possible because the computer automatically assigns a new one after you replug it. However you can assign a letter to the external hd after you plug it.

i think the letters are assigned according to the order u insert the disks so whichever disk u need F, insert it before the one u want as G.

at least that's what i think

This is the way I have also solved this problem. It's the easiest way atleast, 'cause you don't have to change any paths

When I tried doing this, the drive letters still does not change (ie. it still reads my F drive as G and vice versa)

Windows can be fickle about the way it assigns drive letters. Try to plug them in in the same order each time or permanently assign them a drive letter as archd said.

you can set a disk letter with the administrative tool like archd already said. if windows' "forgets" the letter of an external hard disk and there is no way to prevent that feel free to post a feature request at microsoft developers network, because that's quite a basic feature that can be implemented without breaking stuff ontop of it (so it could be distributed with the windows update service).

nope. windows doesnot remember the order in which hard disks were connected. the order of windows partitions autolabeling is c:\ for the windows' installed disks' primary partition, d:\ for the secondary partition of the windows-containg disk, ...
then come all partitions of the other disks in hardware detection order ( see bios autodetecting ), again starting with primary and going on with extended / logical / whatever partitions.

Yup it's true you can change it with administrative tool or you can use third party tool (but usually the order of external storages are same with the order you plug the storage i.e. 1hd e: 2hd f: if the order you plug it 2 then 1, 2hd e: and 1hd f: and vice versa).

Primary partition for windows, actually it's not always C: (b: and a: are not used) you can change even to D: but it will need you to partition and format the disk first (it will give you protection for some (poor) malware but it's not all actually).

[Only registered users can see links. ] i had the same problem as u have.
and i found a solution to it. when u plug in a hd just change the letter to example K:(via system management) so that when u connect other hd's it will not replace ya current one(if other hd is connected and ya old one is not it will get the first next letter so thats why go more further in alphabet). the letter K: will be always the letter of that particular hd(if u dont connect many hd's so that other takes its place).

my external hd's are R: S: T: and U:
so when i connect them (it doesnt matter in which order) they always get these letter i assigned.
