-Intro-

I get asked this very frequently since I have an obbsession with drum and bass and there are lots of stingy people out here (epsically in the Electronica [techno] world). This is a loophole. As in its not 100% legal but you are using legal programs to do it. It is a way to get myspace music off any myspace profile at the posters original quality without using ileagal programs that don't work anymore like the myspace gopher or websites that will rip the music for you but you will receive reduced quality files. This is no worse than stealing music through other means using p2p file sharing programs and torrents. Stealing is Stealing.


-Steps-

1. Bring up your web browser and download and install the audio software program: Audacity [Only registered users can see links. ]

2. Launch Audacity and you will see a drop down box in the top middle or top right hand corner. It will have a picture of a microphone off to the right of the box. Choose the option "Wave Out Mix" or "What You Hear" it differs from sound card to sound card. (Most manufactored computers have "What You Hear")

3. Download the windows system tool "lame_enc". You can get the file at any windows file site or you can actually get it at the audacity website. Download teh file and extract it to C:\WINDOWS\system. I will tell you more about this tool if you don't want to risk putting anything into your system folder. The lame_enc is a Audacity program extention to encode and convert files into .mp3 format.

4. Go to your favorite bands website and pause the track you want to download. (IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE ALL PROGRAMS THAT USE SOUNDS ARE TURNED OFF OR THEY WILL END UP IN YOUR SONG.) Open the Audacity window and hit the big Red Record button at the top left of the window then play your song all the way through til the end. Once the song ends hit the stop button on audacity.

5. Once you hit stop on audacity you will notice you have a little bit of silence at the beginning and end of the track. You can cut out the silence at the beginning and end of each track as follows:
a. Highlight the silence by left clicking on the wave diagram and dragging it to the start of teh song.
b. Once it is highlighted hit "Ctrl+X" and it will cut it out.

6. In order to save the file make sure you don't have the recording active. If you do just click off the wave diagram or hit stop again. Go to the file Tab and click the option "Export to MP3" The first time you attempt to convert to mp3 there will be a prompt asking you to locate the Lame MP3 decoder. (The lame_enc) file we downloaded earlier. It will be in C:\WINDOWS\system

7. Once you complete this step you will be able to play your favorite my space music on your favorite media player or even put them on your ipod. Enjoy ^^

effectively you are 'sniffing' your audio output and redirecting it to a file the mp3 encoding program...
i see no reason why it should not work...

with a more professional audio adapter you can use a different channel for your normal output while you just grab the channel used by the playing software ( wmp browser plugin i guess )

a pretty lot faster approach however is grabbing the network card input and filtering the sound stream, so you can record stuff faster then realtime ( you record it in the time it takes the plugin to download the stream instead ). consult [Only registered users can see links. ] ( windows port of tcpdump and libpcap ) for package sniffing.

so confusing and time consuming id rather stick to torrents than searching the whole web for a single song even though its easy to find with google.
i really don't care about the legality of what i do.

Well the stuff I listen to you cant find in torrents and there is a lot of indie stuff and underground producers (dubplates) so for some music genres you cant find bit torrents. even harder if it was released for 12" only.

@ Xibo The only downside of that is when you use those plugins you lose quality of the sound and im a quality freak. The My Space Gopher was an example of this problem.

best place to get music: limewire

P2P works sooo much nicer than bit torrents for small files, just put in a song name and then use your brain to realize which one is the song. you can also preview a song while downloading it to make sure it is the right one before the d/l finishes.

the plugin only plays the stream that arrives at your computer - it doesnot convert anything ( other then the obvious decoding to PCM ) of it unless it's a really bad plugin. precission loss happens when you encode your stuff to e.g. mp3 ( lame can only do mp3 afaik ).

eventually you might like flac ( free lossless audio codec ) or ogg ( vorbis encoding, it's lossy but it has a much higher quality-filesize ratio then mp3 ) more then mp3 ( it's losy and only widespread because every no-matter-how-bad player can play it )

also is the grabbing thing lots less illegal then the use of BT, since while grabbing the music, the band's server is willingly transmitting it to you - unlike BT where you are making copies without asking the author for permission and seeding it forth to others without even mentioning the authors on top of that...

BitTorrent is P2P. A bad client might try to request file fractions in sequencial order, but in general file 'preview'-ability is dependent on the file format ( e.g. mp3 file format has it s id3-tag at the end of the file while the start of the audio stream is at the (next-to-) beginning of the file )
