Ok so i read the faq at the top, but it didnt say that there was a converter that converts AVI,MKV and OGM files into MP4 files only MP3. So wut im basically asking is wuts a good converter thats FREE and user friendly that converts AVI,MKV and OGM files to MP4 as i wanna watch vids on my PSP.
AVI -> MPEG4 is easy, most converters can do that. But MKV and OGM is another case, the hardest way to convert them to avi is to hardsubbed the file. You can also use a converter which convert them to avi and leaving the option to select subtitles/audio there even if you convert them.

For hardsubbed files, it's practically effortless. There's a PSP version of MediaCoder with presets. You'll figure it out pretty quickly. Free and easy. [Only registered users can see links. ]
For softsubs in .mkv (, it's a bit more complicated. You need to rip the subtitle file from the file (in .ass or .srt format) using mkvtoolnix ([Only registered users can see links. ]).
Using the command prompt (Start Menu > Run > cmd), type in the following: "mkvextract tracks AIRMOVIE.mkv 3:subs.ass" without quotes, and change "AIRMOVIE.mkv" to your video file's name (To make your life easier, just put the original video file in your folder (your username) in "Documents and Settings"). The number 3 should be the correct one, unless you're working with files with multiple audio tracks, in which case you can just check the file using "mkvmerge GUI". Replace the number if necessary.
With this done, you now have a .ass file. Now, open mediacoder, click on "subtitle", then put the subtitle file in the "Subtitle" box (make sure to enable subtitles). Then, plug your psp into your computer and press "start" in MediaCoder.
Yes, mediacoder can make hardsubbed files. Adding the subtitle will hardsub rather than softsub. Also, I can't seem to hardsub using the psp converter. I wish I knew why. I suppose the "optimal" way to do it would be to use some hideously long command in mencoder. My recommendation is to just use the xvid versions of your files and just convert those, unless you have an encoder friend who happens to have time to educate you.
thanks ,but a stupid question wuts the difference between soft subs and hard subs? Also can the mediacoder program convert .mkv files with subs to a MP4 formatt with the subs being in sync with the dialogue?
Softsubs are removable. You can turn them on or off while you play the file. Hardsubs don't give you that option. They're painted on, so you'd better like them. And you certainly can convert .mkv files with subs to mp4 format with subs being in sync. I used mp4 container with h.264 codec.
Ok i tried out mediacoder and it works great, theres just one problem when im watching the vid on my PSP the subs at the bottom r cut off is there a way to fix that? or does it have to do with the resolution? if its the resolution wut resolution do u use?

Have you try Amadis? It's a converter to a lot of video format including MP4. And for the MP4 format it self, Amadis even has an option to convert video format to PSP (you dont have to bother about the setting, cause Amadis automaticaly do the setting for you).
And the result is good. I've use this converter to convert AVI to PSP once, and the loss of quality is low. The layout of this converter is the same as Xilisoft (if you happen to use xilisoft before, you'll be familiar with Amadis layout).
