Just woke up and a bit lazy to do my hw, so I will make some "guide of computer rigs" divided by price category

Low end (Under $1000)

- Cpu : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz @$170
- Ram :
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 @$57
- Mobo :
ASUS P5K-V LGA 775 Intel G33 ATX @$135
- VGA :
EVGA 512-P3-N862-AR GeForce 9600GT Superclocked 512MB @$125
- HD : Seagate Barracuda ES.2 ST3500320NS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB @$100
- Case : Any Mid tower with minimum 550-600 Watts psu @$130 max recommend
- Monitor : Acer AL1916WAbd Black 19" 5ms @$180
- DvD rom + Burner: Lite-On 20X Super Allwrite(oem) @$24
- Mouse+Keyboard+Speaker : Up to you

Total (Without OS) $921
With this rig:

You be able to:
- Play all latest FPS game in medium to high (not very high) settings (on a reasonable resolution 1024x768 up to 1280) Excluding Crysis

- Any mmorpg should be no problem (dunno about Age of Conan...)
- Most racing game at 1280 should be no problem (Grid should be ok at that resolution)
- etc etc~ can't think any other at the moment~~ like I said.. just woke up

- Anyone feel free to comment
- all parts price using newegg.com as a guideline. (thats my online shop for the past 6 years~)
- You don't have to follow my rig completely~ its only a guide after all

probably later on the day (or when I'm in the mood, will make a higher rig)~~

Let me help you get the price :3

CPU : Q9300 @$270 (I recommend get Q9450 because of L2 cache 12MB instead of 6MB @$330)

Mobo : EVGA nForce 780i SLI 775 A1 @$280 (I don't see any problem with this mobo :3, Im using 780i Evga also haha)

VGA : EVGA GeForce 280 GTX @$450 (Well, if you have some green to spend the go for it

PSU : CoolerMaster Real Power 850 Watt @$200 (good choice)

RAM: Corsair TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF 4 GB DDR2 @$150 (Holly! this is good stuff)

CPU Fan: Zalman 9700 NT @$80 (Im using the 9800 series I believe, and its great, 9700 NT also good)

HD : Western Digital SE16 500 GB SATA @$75 (both WD and Seagate are the best)

DVD R/W ROM: Lite-On 20X SATA @$30 (At this point, andy burner from Lite-on will do~~ all are good in my opinion :3)

Case : CoolerMaster Cosmos 1000 @$190 (its a bit pricey but looks good :3, but I prefer my thermaltake Armor series more )

Total Price : $1725

Bottomline : Its a good buy, although I will wait for the Vga price to drop a bit...

Here is my computer~~ (the rig detail on the post #3)

I heard from E3, the developer of crysis(or is it Farcry2?) promised that their game will run on a $600 pc..

I wonder when they say "run" is it equal to "playable"

Ahem, this is not a thread about discussing games. It's a thread about "Gaming Rigs", don't go off topic or if you are, make a comment that is on-topic.

On Topic: I am considering a gaming rig myself, though I'm looking at the new graphics cards by either ATI or Nvidia (HD4870/HD4850) (X280/X260)
I'm thinking of getting HD4850 since the price is low and the performance is commenable (not as good as the 9800 series, but those are too expensive when compared to the 4850)

Well I am hell of biased to intel and nvidia because they pay the algorithmics contests i participate, therefore my recommendations are:

* Intel Core2 Quad Processor, Yorkfield generation, because 45nm chips need less power and produce less heat then the cheaper 65nm ones. Even though i have a kentsfield ( q6600 ) and it runs on <45°C under full load with the bundled fan.

*Hitachi Ultrastar AK1000 or better HDDs because integrated reserve power supply = no data loss on powerfailure, and 32MB Cache speed up disk accesses alot. I know people whine in the web about IBM/Hitachi HDDs breaking alot but I had 15 HDDs in my life, 13 were from either IBM or Hitachi, the 3 that broke[2 headcrash, 1 microcode virus] were the 2 Maxtors and one from IBM who sent me a better one after i warrantied

* nVidia Geforce at least FX 8000, because you need geometry shaders for future games. I dislike ati alot because first their opengl support sucks ( technically they don t
