does one have to have played the touhou game(s) in order to understand the doujinshis?

if its doujinshi, the storyline does not matter, cause all they do in doujinshi is ... ~~sex~~

if you've used doujinshi outside of this thread it'll be wrong :)
more suitable would be h-dounjinshi

but to topic, as dc said I doubt you'll need to plays the games (pointing to storyline again), but I guess it'll make it more interesting if you did (just to compare)

Well Touhou is just a game or alot of games, so they dun really have a main story. For doujinshis, they dun really follow the main plot of the original story.

You should be alright reading them without playing. You'll miss a few of the gags I suppose, but nothing important.

Not neccessarily, but it would help you sometimes, especially one that's created to exemplify the situation of Gensokyo :) and the official one,, [ created by ZUN ]

For example :
-The Imperishable Night story Rewrite
-Inaba of the Moon and the Earth
-All the official stories made by ZUN
