Summary: Light Yagami is an intelligent young man who resents crime and corruption in the world. One day he discovers a notebook called "Death Note" which drastically alters his life. Within the book, it is written that if you write the name of a person that you know, they will die. After a successful experiment with the Death Note, Light uses it to cast Judgment on all who does evil in the world. With Ryuk as his shinigami (the original owner of the Death Note), Light is bent on changing the world where only good people live and evil does not exist. He is however not without opponents as the government is trying to track down the mysterious deaths occurring around the world and the person they hire is none other than the greatest living detective, L. The series focuses on how Light uses his intelligence to kill criminals as well as those who get in his way of finding out his identity and to prove his innocence to those who are closely working with him.
Review: Death Note is one of the most sophisticated mangas to be released in '07. There is a lot going on within each volume and one must read carefully to fully grasp what is taking place. With that said, it is more similar to that of a suspense novel than a manga, where if you miss one word or sentence you would be lost in place. The manga is so well written and is the strongest point of the manga. The art is also well drawn as each character design is unique with great detail and features. One of the key elements of Death Note is that it does not rely upon flashbacks to tell the story (with one exception) and with that said it makes it a unique manga. The only gripe is with the ending as it wasn't nearly as suspenseful as the rest of the story. Other than that, a truly great suspense manga that should not be missed by anyone.
