Synopsis: Tsukihime is an ongoing manga series based on the visual novel game by Type-Moon. The manga is done by Sasaki Shonen. There are currently 6 volumes released. The manga is categorized as drama, horror, mystery, romance and supernatural. This review is for volumes 1-5.
Summary: The series follows Shiki Tohno who has suffered an life threatening injury which causes him to see lines (death lines). These lines, when traced by a sharp object will cause a clean cut on a human being and cause any objects to be destroyed. Soon after discovering this ability, Shiki meets with a mysterious woman who gives him glasses which causes him to not see the lines anymore as it was the cause of his mental disorder. After several years, Shiki returns back home to the Tohno residence where he was banished and has now united with his sister Akiha (who is now the head of the Tohno residence). Akiha is responsible for her brother's well being and life seems to be normal for Shiki until the day he meets with Arcueid which causes him to lose control over his mind, thus leading from one strange event to another.
Review: Tsukihime is a fine example of how horror mangas should be done. With all the vampire theme mangas available, Tsukihime goes a step ahead of them by offering a unique story that doesn't feel rushed and is very interesting to follow. Tsukihime does a fine job incorporating elements from other mangas of this genre and balances it out in a way that makes it work for this manga, whereas it fails for other mangas of the same genre. Character development is done effectively well. Each character is given ample time for readers to understand who they are and where they are coming from. Although, there are few characters who are not explained thoroughly until the latter part of the series, it is not to the point where it is intolerable for the reader. The art is clean for the most part, though there are a few scenes that could have been done better (refers to volume 1). The fights in particular are done very well and with great emphasis on action. One of the best horror/action/mystery mangas you will ever read.
