I been looking around the web lately and found a number of visual novels and just wondering if they are games like they say. I haven't played one or tried one yet and just wondering what is required to play them. In addition, I would like to know some titles to check out or look for. I'm very interested to in them and would like to know more information.

Dude... I will simply recommend a few things to try first.
1. Ever 17...
2. Clannad...
3. Type Moon starting from Tsukihime to Fate Stay Night.
If you don't enjoy reading, you might get bored easily. Gamer types are different, some prefer actions rather than the stories. However, I can assured you that those three are amongst the best visual novels.

What do you mean by mainstream ones?
Ah, thxs I will look into them and heard of a few. I really don't care of the gameplay, just the experience of playing. Uh, forget what I said about mainstream.

also if u prefer action instead of stillness try the school days or summer days games, they are massive files but quite good, as long as u get english patch.

I would recommend Castle Fantasia 2 and brave soul. They are visual novels with an Element of RPG. Also, Utawarerumouno is another one you should play (these are in english, Fyi)
It all depends on what you define "game" as.
But ya, Recommendations would be
1 Brave soul
2 Castle fantasia 2
3 Utawarerumouno
4 Any [Only registered users can see links. ] Vnovel
5 Any [Only registered users can see links. ] Visual novel
well visual novels aren't really games. they can rather be considered literature...
therefore, as someone else already said, if you don't like reading, visual novels might bore you.
unlike in hardwritten novels however the 'reader' can interact with the storyline every now and then, thus allowing different 'paths' of retelling to be taken, which can range from just the story being told from another characters point of view to having the story turning completely different depending on the reader's actions.
also, most of the visual novels have the morally question-worth hentai content, which makes the whole genre be considered 18+... the irony is in the good visual novels you will simply skip the ero-chapters because you want to know how the story keeps going.
like others said typemoon's and key's VNs are very good.
although i haven t found the time for it yet i believe myself yourself is quite good, too...

Lol. Those, epsically Shuffle I will get too. I'm more of RPG player, but ever once in a while I like those types of things. I do REALLY enjoying reading, so the visual novels whole length thing isn't a big deal for me as I would thought.

They are basically novels but with music and pictures along with it. Also, you can usually get thing to choose from to go on a certain path. Out of al the ones 've played though, A Dream Of Summer is best!
