Re: Tsukihime
Whatever you do, don't watch the anime first if you're interested.
Just don't.
I SAID DON'T WATCH IT! ERASE IT FROM YOUR MEMORY!
Ahem. Now that we got that out of the way.
It's a TYPE-MOON novel, where can it go wrong? It's one of those (rare) games that makes you want to skip the sex scenes to see what happens next. Nasu's writing is pure genius so if you want a game that keeps you glued to the screen from beginning to end, by all means try it. It has great plot, great characters, great setting, great everything. If there's something wrong about Tsukihime it's the sex scenes. As I said, TYPE-MOON's writer ranks as one of the best in the business, his metaphors during these scenes are laughable. I hope you enjoy seafood because you're bound to read about it. The art half of TYPE-MOON is also not as good as the writing, but the writing more that makes up for it.
There's also a kind-of-sequel-but-not-quite named Kagetsu Tohya that's also translated, if you liked Tsukihime and want some more background on the world and the characters play it.
Now, for the ones who might be wondering about the warning in the beginning of this post. There IS a 13-episode Tsukihime anime series, but it completely butchers everything good about the game. The characters are all wrong, there are massive contradictions and screw-ups during the show and they tried to merge the five different paths in the game into one and the result was a hideous monster with filler content that completely disregards all characters from the Far Side of the Moon route. Think your average eroge anime conversion, only ten times worse.
If by some cruel twist of fate you already watched it and hated it, do give the game a chance anyway. I admit it, I watched it first two and thought it was bland as f*ck. Took me 6 months to finally give the game a go and now I love it. Let's just ignore the anime into oblivion. There is no Tsukihime anime, don't mention it.
*wonders how much of a TYPE-MOON nut this huge rant made me look like
