Nocturnal Illusion is a wonderful Japanese hentai game, developed by Excellents Japan. It was translated into English and released in the United States in 1997
Official description:
Quote:
You are Shinichi Kashiwagi, a college student. Out camping one night, a typhoon hits and you find yourself cold and lost in the middle of the woods. Struggling against the roaring winds and pouring rain, you stumble downhill and injure yourself. When you wake up, you are in bed with a beautiful woman. She's trying to warm up your cold body through some very erotic means. Later on, you discover that you are trapped in a large antique mansion full of gorgeous ladies. The problem is, you can't get out. They can't get out either. But the mistress of the mansion senses the power of change within you... and if you help the ladies resolve their inner conflicts, you might just be able to return to your world with the girl of your choice.
The story (9/10)
A mysterious mansion, which exists beyond space and time, with it's inhabitants, suffering from all kinds of problems, carried from the normal world. I beleieve that one of the best ways to reveal characters' feelings to the player is to stick all characters together in an enclosed space and get them interact. The story unfolds as you go through the game - maybe you'll understand the last few bits a bit early, but that's not a problem, since you WILL be captivated till the ending.
One thing I didn't like was that sex solves everything. I won't spil the game for you - just notice how characters are ignored after Shinichi has sex with them.
The characters (8/10)
All of the characters are rather flat till some specific part in the story. They all have problems, which they are unable to solve, so they seem to be stuck in time and spend day after day waiting for someone to help them. Still, when you, the main character, come, they are finally ably to continue their lives.
Some characters get much attenton, some - little. Still, you will be motivated to find out much more about them, when their turn "to be saved" comes.
The art (7/10)
Not too bad, but hey, what did you expect from a game made for Windows 95?
The sound (?)
Found it to be annoying, since there are no more than 4 melodies. Since the game is VERY long, you're best turning it off.
The content (6/10)
At last, we come to the part in which game fails the most. First of all, I have to mention that it's long - not an exactly bad quality, but in combination with some others it might be a nuisance. The game is linear - you don't advance till you find a specific place of the mansion to visit. Without a guide, this game becomes three times longer. Use a guide. Don't waste your time.
About the hentai part... I call it excessive. There are way too many kinds of perversions for a rather normal player (not an extreme pervert). I mean, sex with a demon, BDSM, sex with a mermaid... Come on, are you THAT perverted to enjoy ALL of this? I hope you are not.
One redeeming feature of the game is the existence of multiple endings (may endings, in fact). While there are no "bad" endings, there are some "normal" endings and some "best" ones. From a game made before 1997, I wouldn't want anything more.
Overall (7/10)
The thing that saves this game from absolute averageness is the story. Once you start playing it, you will find yourself absorbed in it and wanting to play more. No, this game isn't great, but it's good enough to catch your attention and keep you playing for hours. Try it.
