Hey, I'm not sure if there is already a topic on this but if there is, sorry Hikari chan!
Anyway, today I was sitting in the school library bored (exam period) and then all of a sudden I saw some old guy across from me (ahem... not just old, I mean ancient) was sleeping and apparently he was watching some weird anime 0.0 - idk what it was but it was intense to say the least. So, I kind of laughed because he was this serious-looking dude with a mustache but then I got thinking if I even I was getting too old for anime. I know some of you are gonna say there is no age limit but seriously, how old do you think is too old?

Tbh I don't think there is an agelimit for anime.
However there may be an age limit for genres.
Anime directly targeted at an audience that is under say 10. If you watch that when you are 30, well, prehaps you should start thinking looking for other shows :P
But for anime as a whole, id say there is no age limit as there is lots of anime targeted for an adult audience (and not just hentai)

^What he said, but for me I guess it depends on the genre. If your in your 30's still watching sailormoon or pokemon or Anpan=man or something like that then I would question it, but for everything else I generally see no age limit.

Well there's no cut off age. If you like something, then you like something simple as that.

Besides we can't forget anime started coming to the US in the 80's, it's not really as new as it seems. It's just that it's only recently that it became a noticable subculture due to Naruto and Cartoon Network.

IMO, Anime is not an obsession but obsession itself. Once u like it , you'll always look for it.

agreed. and even now, it's still growing and becoming more noticed...

about the age limit, i dont believe there is one. i just agree with kouzanno for the most part. if you think you are, that's when you are.
if you think it's fine, then it's all good ^^

maybe if you directed that question at people who didnt know as much about anime or something, then you'd get a cutoff age of around... 20+? which would be like half of sh. >.<"
but around here, for the most part, you'll see that we dont really believe in a cutoff age.
well, except for the exceptions xD like pokemon... lolz...
if you're in your 30s and still watching ash try to beat the guy thats stronger than him, then i do feel a bit sorry for you...
cuz he's been following the same road for like 10 years now.

train ---> fight ----> lose to someone stronger ----> train more to beat said stronger person ----> win

for the most part, i dont think he's gonna change that road anytime soon. lol

Actually I'm a little worried that since Cartoon Network and Adult Swim semm to be dropping a good deal of anime, I'm worried it might go under again.

You see this with every subculture. High periods and low periods. A subculture is chosen to be targeted by executives in corporations, and they get more notice, because of it. Then for a time it becomes the "cool" thing then it recedes back down eventually.

Rap was actually made popular so companies would have a target to market to. An even more recent example is Mountain Dew and gaming. You see quite a few commercials where Mountain Dew tries to sell Halo drinks as "gamer fuel".

It seems that the profitability of anime is on the down right now, and so there's a good chance it might get smaller again. The future of the industry seems to be online distribution, but that's gonna mean a smaller audience.

Well, i think this is just more in the states. In other places, i dont have much of a clue. But for somewhere like japan, its more of a part of life. So it wouldnt go as unrecognized as it would like somewhere here. It'd be easy for it to just slip right back under the radar, which means a smaller amount of ppl will discover anime in the first place. and, as you said, it'd just become a smaller subculture for us.

Industries do this all the time. they'll put stuff out there that's the new high. the latest thing out there. and since anime has hit a low for the most part, it's started to be dropped by adult swim. even the good ones are just dissappearing in place of more... cartoonish stuff.

I think that if they just put out the good stuff like they did with code geass and eureka 7, they'd get a bigger audience. But, then again, things as good as those are a bit hard to come across. and because of the whole "dub" thing, it'd take a while before they got to the states in the first place.

So, maybe you're right.
the future of anime in america = internet ^^
but i have no problems with that :JFBQ00212070515B:

You guys might be right about the no rule on age limit and that's how I feel, but if you saw Mr. Mustache geezer sleeping in front of the screen showing some weird anime, you too would want to question yourself. Anyways, I guess he was not afraid to show his love for anime to the public. Definitely adding him as my role model now lol!

@ Unforgiven

Actually from what i know Anime is doing pretty well across the pond in Europe. Somewhere along the line the US anime subculture just went online with it, unfortunately this means less profit for the companies, which means less anime.

It could be fixed if we got rid of our cultural bias that all cartoons are for children and would show better stuff during prime time hours. But that probably won't happen.

I'm mostly worried that people who would otherwise like anime won't have a way to get exposed to it.

@general: I think it went online mostly because of, well, convenience. 1, it became easier to watch an episode when you felt like it or had time. all you had to do was simply download it.
and 2, you could find a larger selection and stuff. you wouldnt have to depend on channels like adult swim to find your new anime. you could find your own series.
which made it easier for anime to become a subculture ^^"

and maybe that bias could be fixed, but i dont think it'll happen anytime soon.
chances are, itll take a while.

@kozuka: lol, i think i like that old guy too.
he just proves, you can never be too old for anime ^^

I don't really think there is an age cap on anime, just make sure you're not so into it though it affects your health, and you ignore people in your life for it. Also like Xami said about the genres
