Guideicond What Makes A Good Story?

Another writer question. As you know, everyone has their own preference for arts. But in a broad sense of literature, what do you think makes for good a story or what makes you engaged to read?

For me, I suppose the plot the would be a good place to start, mostly likely because it is the hardest for some writers to do. If the execution is strong though and the characters are solid, the story plot and overall design will carry it along through a nice journey.

a good story should have the following.

characters that allow readers to connect to them on a personal level. a good way to do this is to include stuff that has happened to the writer so the reader will go " oh i know how that feels" something of that nature

good plot. this should be the backbone of the story there is no point of spending so much time developing characters if nothing is going to happen in the long run.

something else that people tend to miss out on is letting the characters speak. using dialog effectively can almost eliminate the need for " eye in the sky" narration witch is something i feel new writers rely to much on. so in closing let the characters run the story, also have a end in mind when writing its always a good idea to plan the story a bit before hand that way you don't get stuck in the middle or have to go back and add things in

Dynamic/Memorable Characters
A story that stays with you and effects you and leaves a mark on your life somehow.

Those things are critical to a Good story in short.

A good plot is clearly important in getting and keeping readers, but beyond that I really have to enjoy the way a writer's words flow. An author could come up with the best storyline imaginable, but if I find it too dense or dry, I doubt that I'll end up reading the whole thing.
