as many of you may know ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder has operantly been going around the U.S. as a major deal. well im thinking this is nothing but a major scam. for example, if this is such a big problem then how come we haven't had problems in the past about this disorder. now what i mean by scam is all those drugs out there for treating said disorder. do they really work or is it just some crazy morphine substitute. well what do you guys think? is ADD nothing but a scam made up by the pharmaceuticals companies or is it for real?

Well there is no scientific test that can for sure 100% determine if you have it or not. Its really up to your doctor to say if you do or don't. If you trace the history of it alot of people are diagnosed for it for the wrong reason.

I for one have ADHD (exactly like ADD just add Hyperactiveness in it). I dont take that Ritalin bullshit but the one I take works sort of but if I don't have it I usually tend to talk a lot more than I would normally XD.

But right now, it doesnt really seem different (But remember that unlike ADD , you eventually grow out of ADHD and it disappears as you get older).

then wouldnt that be more like being a chatty person instead of having some ADHD.? actually how is the drug does it make u like calm or something? is it similar to what Zoloft does (the depression drug)

Ive never tried Zoloft so I wouldn't know, but basically yeah what it does is it calms you down and tries to give you a longer attention span. But it depends on the type of person though, there's different levels of ADD and ADHD.

well, nowadays people are trying to find out a name for everything a person can have, so even the smallest thing could get a name. but like PDD-NOS (what I have) it's hard to test if a person has it or not, since the difference is so small from normal people with just normal problems that it's hard to find out the problem. (in my case I had some other things aswell like depression and panic attacks)

but anyway, like you said it may just be another media circus for nothing...

Of course it's a scam. ADD is the excuse lazy parents use to shot their kids full of medication and put them into a zombified vegitable state for most of the day. I have family that use to work in the school system and there is no real test for ADD that teachers or doctors can preform.

It basically goes like this, "Little billy is to hyper and I don't want to deal with it. Here take these pills."

Didn't mean to offend, but i do understand this sort of stuff. I have a friend who had ADHD and he said that key is just learning to deal with it. I mean there are people out there who do suffer from this, but there are those out there who just use it as an excuse and they do take medication by the handfull. I have seen it and it is sad what happens.

I have experienced more or less similar case and actually I agree with VooDooLord, medicine is not necessary needed as you can learn how to deal it. The only problem is you have to be willing to learn =w=. There are some people out there that doesn't want to accept their problems and try to cure everything with pills.

What baltazar is saying is true, you don't need pills for ADD or ADHD, you just have to learn how to suppress it.

From what I gather about it, ADD is like other diseases occuring today that are just names for behaviors that have existed all along. Naturally drugs can 'treat' it temporarily (similarly a couple of beers may be able to treat depression for a little while), but really it is more about trying to get people to act more 'normal.'
My opinion on it is that there are a lot of people who are not said to have ADD who need to learn to control themselves, so it's just another specification that somebody saw fit to add to the already enormous spectrum of specifications (like 'this' is a cold, whlie "this" is a blah blah blah, like I care).

And to balance the (not entirely) unintended seriousness of my spiel- boingo boingo whoopsy knickers.

EDIT: P.S.- oh yeah, a lot of the drugs used for ADD and ADHD aren't directly depressants, but rather are stimulants with microscopically small up times and a very long, drawn out depressive after-effect.

To answer the thread's question, no, it's not a scam. This is not an opinion, it is a statement of fact. It is an imbalance in the chemicals of the brain. It IS true, however, that there is a fair deal of overdiagnosing ADD when it simply is not the case. Many irresponsible parents/teens/kids use AD/HD as an excuse.

@Bluefire101: Chances are pretty high that you're taking a medication which is almost chemically identical to that Ritalin 'bullshit'.

@LordOmnit: Most medications for treating AD/HD are stimulants.

@BaltazarDZ: If a person is able to simply "deal with it" and function normally with little effort, it most likely isn't ADHD.

There is no 'cure' for AD/HD, as it is not a disease. It is a lifelong condition. It cannot magically develop later in life, nor can it disappear with time. What many people do not understand is that AD/HD does not always manifest in different people the same way.
