Well... technically you won't even notice them without specialized equipment anyway so we could already be walking around dead and not know it; however, the ozone layer, the clouds and the atmosphere all add to our general protection from various cosmic rays and we already are moderately resistant to all but intense bursts of concentrated radiation or long term exposure due to pigmentation and the cancer killing T-lymphocytes.
As for these infrequent intense bursts, such as the one described earlier; they are substantially weakened en route by dust clouds, meteor belts, gravitational pull from gas giant planets, planetoids, planets, our moon and the angle they hit us at. Then we still have the natural defenses of our planet and bodies. Plus clothing, buildings, trees and sunscreen. In other words we are more likely to die from a meteorite, ala Tunguska, than a brief wave of radiation.
